If you are a Cebuano, you have probably realized that many streets in Cebu are named after famous people in history. I decided to gather 10 common streets in Cebu and create a list of meaningful information about these streets.
1. Colon Avenue
Named After: Christopher Columbus (c.1450/1451–1506)
Trivia: Cristobal Colon, or more popularly known as Christopher Columbus to many, is an Italian explorer. He has completed 4 voyages across the Atlantic ocean.
Location: Colon Street is in downtown Cebu. Previously known to be the center of commerce in the city, Colon is now to known to be the Divisoria of Cebu.
2. Gorordo Avenue
Named After: Bishop Juan Bautista Perfecto Garces Gorordo (1862–1934)
Trivia: Did you know Bishop Juan Bautista Gorordo is one of the former Bishop Emeritus of Cebu from 1910 to 1931?
Location: Gorordo Avenue expands from Colegio Immaculada Concepcion near Mango Avenue to JY Square. Some of the tourist attractions in the area include University of the Philippines Cebu, The Golden Peak Hotel and Handuraw Pizza.
3. General Maxilom Avenue (Mango Avenue)
Named After: Brigadier General Arcadio Molero Maxilom (1862–1924)
Trivia: You might have not known Brigadier General Arcadio Maxilom, right? He was a Filipino teacher and a hero of the Philippine Revolution.
Location: More commonly known as Mango Avenue, General Maxilom Avenue is considered to be the red-light district of Cebu. Mango Square, University of San Carlos North Campus and Iglesia ni Cristo includes the many landmarks along this area.
4. M. J. Cuenco Avenue
Named After: Senator Mariano Jesus Diosomito Cuenco (1888–1964)
Trivia: Mariano Jesus Cuenco is a Filipino Cebuano politician and writer? He was a member of the Liberal Party and became a Senate President. As a writer, he was known as Lauro Katindog.
Location: One of the less traveled streets in Cebu City, M. J. Cuenco Avenue connects Carreta Cemetery and St. Joseph Parish. Hipodromo is also located along the area.
5. Osmeña Boulevard (Jones Avenue)
Named After: President Sergio Suico Osmeña Sr. (1878–1961)
Trivia: Sergio Osmeña is one of the leading political figures in Cebu history. He was the fourth president of the Philippines from 1944-1946.
Location: More popularly known as Jones Avenue, Osmena Boulevard is the road that connects the Capitol Building and Plaza Independencia. One of the longest roads in Cebu City, along the area includes the following landmarks: Fuente Osmeña, Metro Colon, Cebu Normal University and CAP Theater (originally the home of the Osmeñas).
6. Junquera Street
Named After: General Inocencio Junquera (c.1831–1911)
Trivia: Did you know that Inocencio Junquera is the governor of Cebu from 1893 to 1895? His legacy to Cebu is establishing the Teatro Junquera, the most important theater of Cebu during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Location: Junquera Street stretches near Velez College going to University of San Carlos until Super Metro in downtown Cebu near University of the Visayas. Did you know that Junquera is also home to Cebuana Magdalenas?
7. V. Rama Avenue
Named After: Senator Vicente Rama (1887–1956)
Trivia: A Cebu senator, he is the father of Cebu City Charter.
Location: V. Rama Avenue stretches from Guadalupe towards downtown Cebu. One of the famous landmarks located within the area includes University of San Carlos South campus.
8. Escario Street
Named After: Dr. Nicolas Gantuangco Escario Sr. (1898–1958)
Trivia: Dr. Nicolas Escario is a physician who founded the Cebu Institute of Technology in 1946.
Location: Escario Street stretches from Capitol Building (kilometer zero) to Parklane Hotel near Ayala Center Cebu.
9. Pope John Paul II Avenue
Named After: Karol Jozef Wojtyla (1920–2005)
Trivia: Did you know that Pope John Paul II visited the Philippines twice? These were on February 1981 during the beatification of Lorenzo Ruiz, the first Filipino martyr, and January 1995 during the World Youth Day.
Location: Pope John Paul II Avenue is the street from SM Cebu towards near IT Park, along the 04L route.
10. Quezon Boulevard
Named After: President Manuel Luis Molina Quezon (1878–1944)
Trivia: President Manuel Quezon served as president of the Commonwealth of the Philippines from 1935 to 1944, the first Filipino to head the head the government of the PHilippines. He’s also considered to be the second president of the Philippines, after Emilio Aguinaldo.
Location: Quezon Boulevard the street that connects all ports in Cebu City.
